Exploring Issues in and Policy Solutions for Credit Card Markets

During the last three decades, credit cards have transformed the American economy. They have revolutionized the daily mechanisms for payment and borrowing, and in the process, have contributed to the mass consumerism that distinguishes American culture and supports the health of our economy. The days of the “one credit card family” are a thing of the past, with some 1.5 billion cards in circulation today—five for every American man, woman, and child.

Not surprisingly, the rapid growth of the credit card market has been coupled with a dramatic rise in consumer debt (as of September 2006, credit card debt in the U.S. totaled 7 billion) and record profits for the industry. This relationship raises some important questions. For example, why are credit cards so much more common in America than in Japan and the United Kingdom? Why do credit card companies continue to issue cards to customers who are such bad credit risks? What aspects of credit cards most often lead consumers into debt traps? What specifically can policymakers do to solve these problems, and are these solutions politically realistic?

As part of the Center’s ongoing efforts to highlight and address consumer debt issues as a key component of our Economic Mobility Program, CAP assembled a distinguished group of experts who discussed these questions and the policy options for moving forward. First, Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan who commissioned the recently released GAO report entitled "Credit Cards: Increased Complexity in Rates and Fees Heightens Need for More Effective Disclosures to Consumers" delivered opening remarks. This was followed by a panel discussion with Ronald Mann, the author of the book, Charging Ahead: The Growth and Regulation of Payment Card Markets, and David Wood, Director of the aformentioned GAO report on credit cards. Also, the Center’s Director of the Economic Mobility Program, Derek Douglas, discussed a Center report regarding a safety rating system for credit cards.

Question by Pleas Alexys: How often does Household Bank report to credit bureaus?
I recently got a Household Bank credit card in order to help build up my credit score. I have only used the card for small purchases and have paid off the balances for 2 months (the amount of time I’ve had the card) but no payments have shown up on my credit report as of yet. I was under the impression that Household Bank reported to the credit bureaus every month. Does anyone know when the payments might show up?

Question by George L: what is the best way to make a business owner realize how important their business credit report is?
what is the best way to make a business owner realize how important it is, to establish their business credit report with dun & bradstreet (even though they have to pay a few hundred bucks for thevalidation) even if they do not intend to use it for credit purposes?

everyone thinks that they can use their personal credit for their business, and feel that no one cares about d&b is this true?

Answer by Space493
The reality is that for a small business to medium sized business owner who does not have need for outside financing or already has that financing relationship in place, they have little need to be listed on d&b.

Also most privately held companies do not want to put out to the public the information that d&b typically asks for. I worked for a privately held German company that did over $ 100,000,000 a year in sales and did not list with d&b or give out any financial infromation for any reason. Any vendor that requested financial information was simply told we do not give that out.

I currently work for the owner of a privately held company who wishes he had never listed with d&b.

You asked what the best way is to make business owners want to go with d&b, well you have to get past the issues above.

You get these once a year at no cost to you at:
Annual Credit Report.com https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/i…
If this is your first time, and you have recently moved, they may require you to call the 877 and get them for free by mail. Follow through with their directions.

Don’t be tempted to pay for the score. This is not free
If you are not making a major purchase for a home and you are just curious of your score range you can go to Quizzle.com https://www.quizzle.com/ or CreditKarma.com http://www.creditkarma.com/ and get an estimate. These are not real fico scores since their scoring system takes into account your Amount of Cash Flow (income in and bills out).
There is also a calculator that I use often to estimate my score (no cost)
Just google: Fico Score Estimator http://www.myfico.com/ficocreditscoreest…
Bankrate.com and MyFico.com have them
Also try googling: Credit.com Credit Score Calculator http://www.credit.com/calculators/score/
^^ They have they most accurate one with more detailed questions to estimate a range of where you fall. These are all free

The only free credit report is annualcreditreport.com.

When you get to the site you will select which credit bureau you want to get the report from. One you receive the report you can go back to the original site and go to the other bureaus.

When you get to the credit bureau sites, they will ask if you want to get a credit score or join the their monitoring program. Say no and continue, you will get your report free.

If at anytime it asks for a credit card #, you have done something wrong, back up and try again

Question by SCC: How do I obtain a free credit report from each of the major credit bureaus?
I heard on CNN Headline News that you can obtain one free credit report per year from each of the 4 major credit bureaus.

Does anyone know the names of each credit bureau, the number to call (or address) and what you need to do to get a copy of your credit report?
